The Good, The Bad, and The Shady

Well, this week has been filled with ups, downs, and what the heck moments.

Let's start with the good!  I love being positive!

THE GOOD:
I went to a thrift store for my first time as an eBay seller!  I was there for a good 3 hours looking at the racks and searching items on eBay.  I couldn't leave empty handed, so I picked up a couple books for myself (I'm an avid reader), a belt I actually needed for work, and these mugs.  The mugs were stamped "Berggren" so in doing a search I found that the mugs sell for about $10 each, I picked up 4 of them for $2.

Question for you all:  I have 3 of the one on the left and only 1 of the one on the right.  Do I sell each mug individually or should I put them in a lot of some sort?

THE BAD:

The Chatter Phone (my first sale ever) ended up resulting in a unpaid item claim.  The buyer never even responded to my messages, nothing.  Ugh, some people.  It really left a bad taste in my mouth.  Well, phone is relisted.

Question for you all: Is there a way to see who is watching your item?  The second I relisted the phone, I had a watcher.  I want to make sure it isn't him!  Go away, bad buyer!

THE SHADY:

Kari at She Thrifts, She $cores recently posted about the 53" Hugfun bears being a BOLO, and I just so happened to have one that my kids got as a gift a couple years back and never played with.  It literally sits in the corner of their room.  So it got listed right away, of course.  I got a message from someone who bidded on the item, saying that he lives close to me, and would rather pick up the item and pay me the BIN price I had listed.  He needs the item by Friday, it's a gift for his girlfriend.  I know that handling things outside of eBay is a strict no-no, and this buyer created his account just yesterday. How do I handle this one?  I would rather not ship the ridiculously big bear and just give it to him, but I am also a "play by the rules" kind of gal.  Plus, he asked me to remove my listing, which I certainly won't do, plus I can't now that he's bid on the item.  I'm hoping he's actually a nice guy and just wants to give his girlfriend this bear, rather than prey on new sellers.

Hope you guys are having a great week!  I just want to say, you all are so great and friendly!  Thank you so much for all your help!

  1. Question #1: I would list all 4 mugs together. Depending on how you wrap them, they just might fit in a medium flat rate box.
Question#2. There is no way to tell who your watchers are. Best thing to do is put that buyer on your blocked bidders list asap. Don't know where to find your BBB? Go to the bottom of any ebay page and look for site map. Under Selling Activities, you'll find it. Add all problem buyers to that list as needed.
Question#3. Sounds very shady. Even if he were to BIN the bear and paid with Paypal, you have no way to prove you delivered it to him in person. He could claim he never got it. You could ask him to retract his bid and cancel the listing and do a private sale as you would any Craigslist sale and meet him somewhere to deliver it. Otherwise, you could end the listing early and tell him you'll ship it. I dunno. Too many variables. Maybe other sellers have better advice. That's a tricky one.

  2. same as advice above. Question #3 NOOOOOO! especially with a new account. Depending on the age/feedback of the asker I have told people to pay through Paypal and we can meet in my town so they avoid the shipping charge. I would NEVER do that with that age/feedback though. The good thing is because its plush it won't be broken. Personally I would email him and tell him that he shouldn't have waited so long :D

    1. I told him if he pays through PayPal and I verify that the funds have been received I'll have him meet with my husband. He got pretty pushy and said that doesn't protect him, and why didn't I just want cash and to go around eBay? I hope I get another bid on the item and he isn't the high bidder, even though I think he will be. I might just ask him to pay extra and I will send overnight shipping. I am so uneducated in these things and naive, I hope he is really a good guy just wanting a gift. I really always see the good in people, and have gotten burned before.

    2. you need to click "report buyer" its on multiple pages. I would also call and have them look over the messages. eBay will take care of it for sure (after all they don't want to lose their cut of the sale). Cancel his bid and block him. Not worth selling to him. Don't deal with push. There is definately something funny going on. I have *never* had someone wanting to meet unwilling to use Paypal. Good guys don't threaten. Unfortunately I learned that at the school of hard knocks. I see the evil in everyone LOL

    3. You may have already resolved this but I completely agree with Grace. Cancel the item, block the bidder. If an issue arises eBay will side with you automatically because they can see that he has asked you to go outside of eBay. The bear will sell eventually to a non-shady person.

Also, since a tracking number cannot be uploaded for local pick up is counts against your TRS status. I have only done one local pick up and will never do it again for this reason.
